Chick feeding


  1. Additional paper on floor with feed very important

  2. 1 scratch tray / 100 chix

  3. 1‐2 Feeders / 100 chix

  4. Lower feeders from day 1

  5. Make sure all info are on bag tickets

  6. Check chix crops 24 hrs after placement – 90% should be full.

  7. 7 day body weight should be at least 4.25 times day old weight

  8. 14 day body wt 9 times day old wt.

  9. Fcr (Food consumption rate) not more than 1.7 at 35 days

  10. Body weight at least 1.8 at 35 days

  11. Always store feed in dry, clean free of rodents – room

  12. Always ad lib, never run out of feed


Water


  1. 2 chick fonts/100 chicks

  2. Vitamins from day 1 ‐7

  3. Lower drinkers from chick arrival

  4. Drinkers should be optimum full when chix arrive, adjust regularly until thumbnail height when older

  5. 2 drinkers/100 chix

  6. Birds drink 2x amount feed eaten

  7. Water should always be available and clean – remove shavings in drinkers

  8. Water intake suppressed when water temp to hot or cold – ideal 10 ‐14 degrees celsius

  9. Drinkers not too far from feeders


Why poor growth


  1. Disease

  2. Stress caused by:
    Brooding temps / floor temps too hot or cold Humidity
    Drafts
    Inadequate ventilation
    High ammonia levels in the house

  3. Space: not enough floor, feed, water – space

  4. Chick quality

  5. Feed quality


Stages


  1. Starter – never under feed. Important for skeletal growth, to ensure strong legs and frame for body

  2. Grower – important for growth of organs and muscles

  3. Finisher – important for growth of feathers and pigmentation
